Palatal Sounds: sounds produced by the collaboration of the tongue and the hard palate

j*: jiǔ (nine), jiā (home), jiàoshī (teacher)
q*: (seven), qǐng (please), qiān (thousand)
x**: xiǎo (small), xiàkè (class dismiss), xiànzài (right now)
* Produce the sounds of j and q by placing the tip of your tongue against the front of the hard palate first, then let the airflow break through the blockage to make the sounds. The lips are flat. Note: The sound of j and q are very similar, but the air making the sound of q comes out much stronger.
** The articulation of x is similar; however, place the tip of your tongue toward, not against, the front of the hard palate and form a small passage to let the airflow come out.
